That includes purchasing appliances and other products that are designed to save energy. The problem with many these products are there expense. Many people can not afford these high price items, which is why the hero program is here to help. The goal is to save energy, water and fuel resources and to use what we produce wisely.

The HERO Program

HERO stands for Home Energy Renovation Opportunity. It is a California financing program that works with local city and county governments to make energy efficient products more affordable by offering funding. The products the program supports are specifically designed to save water and produce renewable forms of energy. This funding has helped thousands of homeowners make their home more efficent.

How Will the HERO Program Save Water?

In California, drought conditions often determine how much water homeowners are allowed to use and what they can use it for. State regulations have been put in place that fine homeowners for using large amounts of water unnecessarily. The HERO program provides homeowners water saving options that will allow them to remain compliant with city and state water usage regulations.

It is estimated that homeowners will be able to save over 250 billion gallons of water through products financed by the HERO Program. There are 50 different categories of products that will be supported through lending opportunities funded by the unique program. Products will be paid for by funds collected from the residences' property taxes.

What Type of HERO Products Are Available?

Many of the products included focus on water conversation and preservation. Artificial turf, drought resistant landscaping options and rainwater collection systems are just a few of the products that are available. Homeowners are constantly trying to improve the exterior look of their home. That can be difficult with water restrictions in place. Many homeowners are choosing to use drought tolerant plants and materials that require little to no water to maintain.

Another option that is being considered by both homeowners and businesses alike is artificial turf. It requires minimal maintenance and no water. Synthetic grass stays green all year long and does not wear away with high levels of foot traffic. It also has a variety of uses other than lawn coverage. It can be placed on patios and around swimming pools or used to cover steps.

Rainwater collection systems and gray water systems allow water to be collected and used in several different ways. Rainwater systems collect water from precipitation while gray water systems are used to gather water that is used during showers, laundering clothes and washing dishes. Water from these areas is passed through a filtration system and then on to compartments that store it for later use. Both systems have been used to dramatically decrease the number of gallons of water used by California households.

Who Is Eligible for HERO Financing?

Homeowners are eligible to participate in the HERO financing program as long as their mortgage debt does not equal over 90 percent of the the value of their home. Both mortgage payments and property tax payments must be current and up to date. Homeowners cannot have any outstanding property liens or have active bankruptcies. Even owners of mobile homes can participate in the HERO program. The only stipulation being that the home is permanently attached to a foundation.

Products that can be purchased using the HERO program must be energy efficient and meet criteria that have been put in placed when it comes to water conversation. It is estimated that there are over 900,000 products that fit into these categories and can be purchased with the financing provided by this program. One problem that a homeowner may experience is that not all professional contractors can be used to install these products. A contractor must be registered with the program before their services will be covered by the financing.
