How To Fix A Problematic Yard With An Artificial Lawn

Learn how to fix a problematic yard with an artificial lawnDepending on a home's geographic location, a lawn can have specific problems that take considerable time and effort to correct. Areas that are prone to drought, can result in dry, brittle grass while homes in cooler areas may be prone to large bare spots in high traffic areas. The size and topography of the lawn can also play significant roles in how easy it is to maintain. Installing an artificial lawn can eliminate many of the problems associated with lawns made of natural grass.

Water Problems

Lawns that have numerous dips and valleys can result in standing water. Puddles and moist areas are the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. Areas of lawn that remain saturated for long periods can eventually lead to bare spots. Too much water can actually drown grass and damage the root bed.

When an artificial lawn is installed, the surface is leveled to prevent deep dips and valleys. After the ground is smoothed over and the filler is in place, an intricate network of channels is put in place to allow water to drain away. This prevents excessive amounts of moisture from building up and damaging the grass or allowing mosquitoes to make a home.

In areas where drought conditions are common, watering restrictions often prevent homeowners from irrigating their lawns. Grass can turn brown, become brittle and die. Extreme cases of drought that lasts for several months, can destroy a lawn's root bed, making it hard to bring the lawn back to its prior state, once rain returns.

Controls Weeds

An artificial grass lawn will remove a homeowners' weed problem. Weeds are virtually eliminated because there is no way for them to put down roots. With synthetic grass, there is a thick barrier between the surface of the lawn and the soil underneath. What seeds to eventually make it through cannot germinate because they do not have the necessary elements for growth, primarily sunshine, water and room to grow.

Eliminates Bare/Brown Spots

Natural grass lawns can develop bare spots in high traffic areas. Pathways are created as people continue to use the same path repeatedly throughout the week. With an artificial lawn, both people and pets can walk or play on the lawn as much as they want. No matter how much they walk or run in a specific area, the grass will not deteriorate or break down. Lawn decorations and furniture can remain in the same spot for extended periods of time without damaging or killing the grass underneath.

Artificial grass is not affected by excessive moisture, drought conditions, mold, insects or plant diseases that can kill or damage lawns leaving large, unsightly brown spots. Synthetic grass is not susceptible to things that would normally harm natural grass. It requires minimal maintenance and retains its color and texture throughout the entire year.

No Need For Chemical Fertilizers or Reseeding

In areas where the soil is poor and cannot provide adequate nutrients to support grass or other landscaping plants, fertilization is required to keep the grass green and healthy looking. Repeatedly fertilizing and re-seeding areas of lawn that become brown or deteriorate because of lack of nutrition can be extremely expensive. Even if feed and seed mixtures are purchased, the cost can be extravagant in areas where they must be applied regularly.

Installing an artificial lawn can eliminate many of the issues that cause grass to die or become damaged. There are many factors that are out of the homeowners' control. Even with diligent maintenance, things can happen that cause bare spots or large brown areas where the grass has been damaged. Landscapers often recommend keeping a bag of feed and seed on hand at all times to help keep ahead of any issues that may appear. With artificial grass, there is no need to store bags of fertilizer and seed, or any other type of preventative maintenance.
