Has the aeration guy come knocking on your door yet this spring? If he hasn’t yet, it will probably happen soon! And when he comes, a savvy lawn owner should consider taking advantage of his services. The best time to aerate warm season lawns like bermudagrass and zoysiagrass is June and July. The best time for cool season lawns like tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass is in late summer and early fall.
What is aeration? It’s the process of removing small “plugs” of soil from your lawn. Plugs measure a quarter to three-quarter inches in diameter, and have a length of one to six inches. While taking out chunks of your lawn seems counterintuitive to encouraging lawn growth, it is in fact an essential part of maintaining a healthy lawn.
Why do you need to aerate your lawn? Over time, and especially with heavy use, the soil in your yard becomes more compact. Soil that is too tightly compacted prevents oxygen, and thereby nutrients and water, from getting to grass roots and stunting root growth. This results in your lawn turning sparser and more scraggly. Another problem that aeration can help with is thatch, a thick, tangled undergrowth of grass that develops over time and prevents grass roots from receiving the nutrients they need.
Aeration breaks up the thatch barrier and provides your grass with the air and space it needs to flourish. Loosening the soil gives grass roots room to grow, and creating plugs in the soil allows water and fertilizers to reach them better.
How can you tell if your lawn needs to be aerated? You can actually test a small area of your lawn first before taking the aeration guy up on his offer. Remove a square foot of your lawn that is six inches deep. If grass roots are only one to two inches deep, it’s probably time for aeration. Those roots aren’t getting enough light, water and nutrients to grow long and healthy. As well, if the thatch layer is a half inch thick or more, it’s time to aerate.
Then there are some basic elements that will alert you to needing aeration. If the lawn is heavily used, it probably has become fairly compacted and is in need of a little loosening up. This is especially pertinent to sports fields, event arenas, etc. Also, if you have heavy clay soil, you should aerate your lawn often. Poorly drained or very wet areas especially need aeration.
Heavenly Greens eliminates the need for lawn aeration! Among many other perks of artificial lawns, your Heavenly Greens artificial lawn will never need to be aerated. Or watered. Or fertilized. Or hedged. The list goes on. Installing an artificial turf lawn is not only cost-effective and better for the environment, it saves you time on maintenance. What are you doing this summer? If you live in Northern California, we really hope you’ve got some outdoor-centric activities on the calendar. With the gorgeous, temperate evenings and roasting hot days we enjoy here in the San Francisco Bay Area, the options for activities that are both fun and culturally enriching are endless. From Shakespeare in the Park to outdoor concerts to weekend getaways, it’s guaranteed there’s something fun you’d like to do outdoors.
There are a million fun activities to do during the summer that involve sitting, standing or lounging on grass lawns. If you suffer from a sensitivity to grass or worse, full-blown grass allergies, you may be dreading upcoming outdoor escapades more than anticipating them. To alleviate discomfort, plan ahead and pack things like picnic blankets and mats, lawn chairs, etc. Wear longer pants or skirts to protect sensitive skin from grass and weeds. Bring bug spray or, if they’re allowed, citronella candles.
Sometimes though, it’s simply too hot for long pants, or too tricky to bring your own seating. These are times when we’d encourage you to keep an eye out for venues that have artificial turf installations. Fake grass is not just for soccer fields anymore, folks– the higher quality artificial turf products on the market today not only look gorgeous for years, and even decades; they also feel soft and natural to the touch.
Here’s a novel idea: why not start installing artificial turf in places like the Shoreline Theater in San Jose or Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord? Rather than force ticket-holders on the lawn to deal with mud, bugs, allergies and more, these venues could ensure comfortable and pleasant experiences for their patrons by installing artificial turf lawn areas instead. A byproduct for them is that there is long-term savings on lawn care and water bills. Plus, cutting back on things like mower emissions, pesticides and insecticides means artificial turf is better for the environment in many ways!

While artificial turf lawns are very low maintenance, they are not entirely maintenance free. There are a few key things to remember when you install an artificial lawn that will help it look fresh and “healthy.”

Just like any outdoor area, artificial turf may collect debris like dust and leaves, especially during messy seasons like fall and spring. There are a variety of things you can do to get rid of debris. An air blower will do an effective job ridding your lawn of looser debris. A push broom and rake are good tools for getting rid of debris that nestles into the grass. You can even use a vacuum on Heavenly Greens artificial lawns!
If you have pets, your artificial lawn may get messy from time to time. Rest assured, the high-quality turf we use at Heavenly Greens does an excellent job resisting stains and odor. In fact, the majority of our clients own pets or run pet facilities. Pet waste will wash away like it does on normal grass, with a little rain or a quick hose-down. For more immediate cleanup, waste can easily be scooped off of artificial turf.
Over time, your artificial turf lawn will get pressed down in areas of high traffic. Fluff your lawn up using a push broom or rake every three months or so to maintain its appearance.

It’s going to be a hot summer—can your lawn take the heat? Besides the obvious struggle with water deprivation, Northern California lawns can experience a lot of other growing pains during the summer months.

Especially if you have a busy, active family, you are looking at heavy-duty wear and tear to the lawn as a result of all the summer fun. Bald dirt patches, a shredded lawn and trampled grass may all result from a summer well spent out of doors.
So how can you take care of your lawn in the heat of the California summer sun? We’ve got a few ideas.
One of the biggest issues is a bald dirt patch. Those ugly brown patches of dirt in the middle of your lawn may result from extra wear-and-tear on the area due to pets or a regularly traversed footpath. Leaving a kiddy pool, trampoline or lawn chair in the same spot on the lawn for a long period of time may also result in adverse effects. Without enough sunshine, the grassy patch of lawn that looks so refreshing in the shade might soon become nutrient depleted. Change up the area you send your pets or children to play. Fence off heavily trafficked areas of grass to allow your lawn a chance to revive itself. Move toys, chairs, etc. around the yard every week or so; this way no one patch of grass takes the brunt of being in shadow, and your lawn will maintain an even, green quality.
Sprinklers. They can be a pain. Make sure you set your sprinklers to go off at least a couple times a week, adjusting for projected summer heat levels as needed. Set sprinkler timers to go off at dawn or dusk, so that water will have time to soak into the ground instead of sizzling away in the sun, never sinking past surface level. Don’t forget to keep an eye on your sprinklers function. Malfunctioning sprinklers can result in a host of issues for your lawn. Carefully examine them every week or two by putting them on Test Mode. Keep an eye out for muddier or dryer patches—you may have a leak or blockage. Sprinkler heads can also easily be knocked off when you or a lawn service mows the lawn.
If you’re interested in ditching the annoyances of caring for a lawn, or simply aren’t up for the challenge of fighting the heat and wear-and-tear this summer, talk to Heavenly Greens about installing an artificial turf lawn. We know how valuable a beautiful green lawn is, and we want to help you create a place where you and your family are safe, comfortable and active all year round. With an turf lawn, you don’t need to worry about pests, pesticides or pesky maintenance issues.

For business owners, installing artificial grass can help you achieve LEED Certification. LEED is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and, according to the U.S. Green Building Council, “LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.”
LEED certification is a mark that a company is aiming to help the environment through its design and how it operates. Certification is met through achieving a certain number of credits, which provide guidelines for architects and designer to develop green buildings. Some credits can be received through synthetic grass installation.
So, how does synthetic grass installation help with LEED certification?
First of all, fake grass reduces water waste. The lawn is guaranteed to be green and healthy-looking, so you don’t have to have your sprinkler system going constantly during the summer heat.
And with synthetic turf products, less chemicals are used to treat it, so the runoff of chemicals into natural waterways isn’t as much of a threat as it is with natural grass, which requires much more upkeep through chemical treatment.
Also, artificial turf products can be 100 percent recyclable, depending on the specific product used. Artificial turf manufacturers can reuse the product for other landscape products.
If you’re looking for a natural alternative for landscaping that can help your building attain LEED certification, the answer is artificial landscaping turf.

Grass allergy is one of the most common pollen allergies, affecting young and old, humans and canines alike. It makes some of the most beautiful months of the year very uncomfortable. Spring and early summer are quickly approaching, and those who suffer pollen allergies need to be prepared. Otherwise known as hay fever, allergic rhinitis results in sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes and nose and watery eyes. Those with a more severe reaction may even get hives upon contact with grass or suffer asthma attacks.
How should grass allergies be managed? There are some simple environmental changes you can make to help alleviate your hay fever.
First, keep the windows closed. If that was too obvious for you, here’s another: keep your lawn cut short. This helps reduce the reproduction of grass pollen in your yard. Obviously it is preferable to find someone else to cut the grass. As a grass allergy sufferer, you should personally avoid mowing the lawn as much as possible during months of high grass pollination. If this is unavoidable, try taking an antihistamine first and wearing a mask to help block the pollen from hitting your nose and mouth.
Other good ideas include avoiding drying laundry outdoors and brushing your pets after they come in from the outdoors to eliminate pollen. Consider using a HEPA filter to help get rid of grass pollen as well. Synthetic lawns are naturally hypoallergenic, so installing an artificial turf lawn in your yard will greatly reduce pollen allergies. We’ll discuss more on this later.
Then, there are lifestyle choices you need to make.
Decrease the strength of an allergic reaction by taking oral antihistamines. Taking non-drowsy antihistamines in anticipation of and during allergy season will help reduce your grass allergy. There are also prescription nasal steroid sprays and long-term administration of allergy shots that may be prescribed by your doctor. If you suffer severe grass allergies that might result in anaphylaxis, your doctor should prescribe a self-injectable Epinephrine.
For those more inclined to seek a natural alternative, studies suggest that a large amount of omega-3 fatty acids and carotenoids help reduce allergy symptoms. This means ingesting foods rich in fatty acids, like walnuts and fish oil, and in beta-carotene, like sweet potatoes and carrots. Other solutions may lie in stress management and even acupuncture. For more on natural remedies to grass allergies, see this helpful website.
Another lifestyle choice you can make is a simple one: choose artificial turf to reduce your allergies.
At Heavenly Greens, we are pleased to offer beautiful, natural looking artificial turf for your yard. Our hypoallergenic turf will relieve those suffering from grass allergies. Just think—that’s three or more months a year you win back to play and relax in your yard without fear of pollen. You won’t have to worry about keeping grass cut short, or about finding someone else to do that work so you don’t have an allergy attack. Artificial turf is a safe, clean alternative to having a natural lawn, and it saves you money and energy in the long run.

The sun is shining and it’s time to head outdoors and enjoy your yard! Wait…is that a sniffle we hear? Puffy, damp, itchy eyes? Clogged sinuses? Oh—bless you! Grab your tissue box. It’s springtime, or as some know it, “allergy season”.
Despite all of the wonderful things you can do in your yard when the warm weather rolls in, if you are allergy prone, you’re probably avoiding heading out there until the pollen settles. Springtime flowers blooming? You’ll admire them from your window. The grass looks green and inviting? Not inviting enough to open the sliding door, thank you very much!
Sadly, allergies can have a huge effect on your enjoyment of warm weather. Many who suffer from seasonal allergies must simply endure them, stocking up on allergy medications and tissues while avoiding the outdoors, bouquets of flowers, pollen-ridden pets, etc. until the pollen in the air clears.
While installing artificial turf in your yard won’t solve all of your allergy problems, it can certainly help you make big progress in this uphill battle. Heavenly Greens artificial turf is allergen-free and mess-free. Eliminating an expanse of natural grass that may be contributing to your allergies will help you enjoy your yard much more during allergy season. And for those with a specific grass allergy, owning a hypoallergenic artificial lawn can be life changing.
That’s why we recommend our natural looking, high quality and always hypoallergenic artificial turf products for the allergy-prone yard owner. No more cutting the lawn, no more grass hives, less allergens to pick up or breathe in when you head outdoors. This is a win-win for you.
Say “Good riddance!” to your allergies and call Heavenly Greens today to schedule an appointment with our helpful team to discuss installing artificial turf in your yard.

Here is a before photo of Kritens backyard. This is a very common problem that a Heavenly greens artificial turf installation can help to solve for the typical of dog owner.

After doing the research and settling on Heavenly Greens, Kristen was sold on the benefits of artificial turf - her husband Charles wasn’t. At first, Kristen’s husband was against the idea and was less then positive about the installation.

It wasn’t until after the project was completed that Charles – was singing a different tune!

Here is what Kristen told us:
I love it!!! The dog loves it!!!! Everyone loves it. My husband told me that this was the dumbest thing I have ever done. He wasn't home when Heavenly Greens did the installation. He got home the day after the lawn installation was completed. He immediately called me and said that he takes it all back! He said that the back yard looks remarkable. He can't believe how our new synthetic grass has transformed our yard from a disaster to a masterpiece.

The crew was great. They took time to answer all my questions and made sure that everything was done to my complete satisfaction. We like it so much that we are thinking about doing our front yard now!

Thanks for sharing Kristen, we love making our customers happy!

Summer is fast approaching in San Jose, and if you are considering getting an artificial lawn installed in your yard, you may have some “hot questions” on your mind right now.
Our Bay Area customers wonder: Will my artificial turf be comfortable and usable in the heat of summer? Is fading an issue in the bright sun? Do I need to worry about any maintenance for my lawn during summer? Heavenly Greens is here to answer those questions for you, and encourage you to make the best choice for yourself and your home.
How hot does artificial grass get?
It’s true that artificial grass does not stay as cool as natural grass, which has water running through it. However, artificial turf will not absorb or radiate heat like pavement, rock or brick. It can be cooled down with sprinklers or quickly hosed down if needed.
Will my synthetic turf fade in the sun?
FieldTurf as well as our other products have built-in UV protection that allows the turf to hold its color even under the most brutal conditions. Independent studies show that FieldTurf will fade at a rate of much less than 1% per year. This means that after ten years in direct sunlight, any color change will be imperceptible to the human eye. We’ve seen an installation in the harsh and sunny climate of Arizona remain beautiful and lush over the span of a decade! Even with the perpetual sunshine and soaring heat index, these happy lawn-owners can enjoy a beautiful, green, maintenance-free lawn for years to come.
What kind of maintenance is required?
With artificial turf, the issue is really keeping it clean rather than maintenance. Easily remove organic materials from the surface by using a leaf blower. Rakes may be required for moving heavier objects; however, a leaf blower is an ideal tool for general upkeep. A stiff bristle broom can be used to “fluff” the high traffic areas. Besides this, you really won’t have to deal with maintenance.
We hope we’ve covered some key issues you may be considering when thinking about installing artificial turf in your yard. If you’ve got more questions, don’t be shy! Schedule an appointment with our San Jose showroom today.
